Reading

At Surrey Square, our curriculum is driven by purposeful outcomes, is relevant to each and every child and is expansive beyond the national curriculum so that our children will know more, do more and BE more!

Why?

  • Reading opens the door to the future.
  • Reading allows children to escape to another world.
  • Reading improves vocabulary and thinking skills.
  • Reading helps children to develop empathy and emotional intelligence.
  • Reading helps children to learn and understand about other people’s cultures, traditions and backgrounds.

Our teaching approach

  • Read Write Inc. (RWI)
  • KS2 Whole class reading daily sessions following reading cycle.
  • TOP 100 reading books.
  • Reading for pleasure opportunities.
  • Daily Teacher/class read.

Why?

We follow a rigorous teaching programme that shows excellent progression from KS1 to KS2 and allows for a smooth transition for children who are ready to be challenged and allows interventions for those who may need further support.

  • RWI- In order to teach children to read in EYFS and KS1 we follow the RWI programme as it is a rigorous, systematic programme for phonics. RWI assesses the children every six weeks and places them into smaller, streamed groups for reading. This allows for a fluid approach to early reading, with children being assessed regularly and progression is seen quickly and children needing interventions are identified regularly rather than with the whole school end of term teacher assessments.
  • Whole class reading- In KS2 we use the whole class reading approach so that the whole class can read more often and have the text modelled more often with the ‘expert’ in the room. Teaching in this way also allows for moving through more challenging texts and/or moving through more texts at a quicker pace. The whole of KS2 follows the same reading cycle structure which gives them access to a variety of texts including fiction and non-fiction every year whilst also allowing them to revisit core reading skills such as inference, prediction and summary.

  • Top 100- The Top 100 are a selection of 100 books in every year group that have been carefully selected by the teachers at Surrey Square with the children, their families and the community in mind. The belief is that every child should have access to a broad
