For many years we have worked in collaboration with Southwark Adult Education in running family learning courses at Surrey Square. Parents work with a tutor for the first part of each session, learning about different aspects of literacy or numeracy. Later in the session they are joined by their children to take part in a huge variety of creative activities aimed at improving literacy or numeracy skills. We see the benefits of these courses almost immediately as parents become engaged in the school learning community and appreciate the chance to get to know a range of other parents and school staff. It is also a great opportunity for the parents to have quality one-to-one time with their child supported by the staff.
Fi Carrick-Davies the school’s Family & Community Co-ordinator says, “I believe that every school should invest in this aspect of education. Over the years we have seen parents complete this course and gain the first certificate they’ve ever had in their lives. The course has been a springboard for parents gaining employment as teaching assistants, and teachers, producing a far-reaching impact on the whole family."
