Maths

At Surrey Square, our curriculum is driven by purposeful outcomes, is relevant to each and every child and is expansive beyond the national curriculum so that our children will know more, do more and BE more!

Why?

  • Mathematics is a core life skill needed by all to navigate everyday experiences.
  • Building upon number sense allows children to be flexible with numbers and across the four operations.
  • This gives children the self confidence to become creative problem solvers, making links with what they already know and helps them to articulate their reasoning.
  • Children will leave primary school with a solid foundation of strategies that they can build upon.

Our Teaching Approach

  • Maths Mastery – CPA approach. Daily one hour maths lessons.
  • Daily 15 minute Maths Meetings.
  • Times Table Rockstars from Y2-6.
  • Times Table badges awarded during assemblies.

Why?

  • We use Mathematics Mastery because it is a CPD programme for staff, with an aim to deepen children’s conceptual understanding.
  • There is a clear calculation progression as the children move up the school.
  • We believe that all children have the potential to succeed and the lessons are adapted to challenge all learners with a concrete – pictorial – abstract approach.
  • There are high expectations regarding the language used during lessons with time dedicated for children to talk through their learning.
  • Lessons and maths meetings are structured so they revisit taught skills in a fun way, consolidating learning and allowing children to make links.
  • Each lesson has opportunities for the children to seek patterns, which encourages mathematical thinking.
  • Deepening conceptual understanding by tackling challenging and varied problems.
  • Not just rote learn but demonstrate understanding.
