Last week, Surrey Square Primary School celebrated its first-ever Democracy Week, providing students with a hands-on experience of democratic processes and civic responsibility. The event, which involved every child from Year 1 to Year 6, culminated in the historic election of the school’s first Pupil Parliament.

Students were split into five political parties, each with their own Members of Class (MCs) representing them. The parties collaborated to create detailed manifestos outlining their proposed changes for the school, the local community, and the wider world. Each party also elected a Leader and Deputy Leader to campaign for the top positions of Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
The week’s events included:
- A press conference where party leaders faced questions from their peers.
- Hustings, where the five leaders delivered speeches to the entire school before a full-school vote.
- The election, which saw every child from Year 1 to Year 6 casting their ballot.

The week ended with a historic victory for the Red Revolutionaries party, who were voted in as the inaugural leaders of the SSQ Pupil Parliament. A huge congratulations was extended to the new Prime Minister, Amira , and Deputy Prime Minister, Solana (both Year 6).

The newly elected Pupil Parliament, including cabinet members and MCs, is now set to begin working on their manifesto promises.

“It has been amazing to witness the excitement and thoughtfulness the children have brought to this process,” said Headteacher Matt Morden. “Democracy Week provided a fantastic opportunity to discuss our half-term value of Respect. The children learned firsthand about the importance of listening to different points of view, being open to new ideas, and treating others with kindness and dignity, even when they disagree.”
Speaking after her landmark win, new school PM Amira said: “I am looking forward to making change for the pupils of Surrey Square. Thank you to everyone for their support!”

Surrey Square Primary School plans to make Democracy Week an annual event, reinforcing the importance of active citizenship and leadership among its students.
