Many of our families over the last 12 years have lived with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) restrictions on their visas, which means that they are not eligible for any welfare benefits, including social housing. Currently, 9% of our pupils are affected in this way.
We've been very committed to raising awareness about this issue, as we've seen how it pushes people into poverty, because paying for private rent in this area of London is extremely expensive. It's also something that lots of people in the UK don't know anything about. We've been working with a journalist called Brenna since 2017 to highlight the impact of living with NRPF, and one of her films featuring four of our Surrey Square families, was recently aired on Channel 4 News. Please see the link below to watch.
We're so proud that our pupils are demonstrating how to be an advocate and activist for themselves and others.
If you have No Recourse to Public Funds and we don’t already know about it, please let our Family Wellbeing Lead, Fi, know by emailing fcarrick-davies@ssq.org.uk as there may be some additional support we can help you with.
