SSq Newsletter – 11th June 2025

Newsletter

Dear Families,

We hope all our Muslim families had a wonderful time celebrating Eid over the weekend – Eid Mubarak!

We continued the celebrations in school on Tuesday with a special Eid Day. Children were invited to come in wearing Eid clothes, cultural dress or clothes that represent who they are.

After an informative assembly, led by Megan and the children, there was an Eid lunch served by Uldson and his team in the pavilion. This was a lovely opportunity for us to live out our values of community and respect by sharing and listening to one another’s experiences.

Don’t forget to donate to our appeal for toiletries in support of Southwark Day Care for Asylum seekers – more information in Fi’s section below.

A reminder that our final Visit Your Child in Class Morning of the year is today. We look forward to seeing you in the bottom hall at 9am, before heading up to classrooms – a great chance to see your child’s learning in action.

There are also a couple of brilliant community events coming up: The OKRFZ Summer party and the famous SSq Summer Festival – all the information about these is below.

Enjoy the rest of the week!

Matt

I am available in school from Monday to Wednesday – do get in touch ([email protected]) if you have any questions in the meantime.

Last week I was so proud of our students who went to Downing Street with housing activist Kwajo Tweneboa to deliver a petition for safe and healthy homes. This issue affects many in our community and we will continue to campaign for our families here at SSq. The children loved every minute of their time in Westminster and even got to see the goings on in the houses of parliament thanks to local MP Joe Powell. Look out for more information about this trip and our campaign work on our website in the coming weeks.

Don’t forget, we have a housing expert coming in once a month, specialising in supporting people in Temporary Accommodation or facing other housing challenges. If you would like an appointment for the next drop-in session, please let me know asap, so I can give you the self-referral form to complete – [email protected]

As part of Refugee Week which is coming up soon, we are taking donations for Southwark Day Care for Asylum Seekers.

The kind of items needed are: shower gel, shampoo, deodorant etc. If you can donate any items like this then please leave them in the box in the main office.

In partnership with the Caring Family Foundation, we have freshly-cooked weekly takeaway meals for any parent to collect from school on a Wednesday morning. If you would like to sign up for this, please email Chef Kam on [email protected] or Abbi on [email protected] to add your name.

There are lots of free courses available at the Thomas Carlton Centre in Peckham – see their website for more information.

For information about local employment opportunities and support in job-seeking, see https://southwarkworks.com/ and https://www.pecan.org.uk/employment-support/

If you are interested in English classes, here is information about our friends at English for Action https://efalondon.org/esol-2/.

Keep an eye on my information page outlining advice from me about various issues that may concern you plus many opportunities that are available to you and your family here in Southwark, also check out the numerous opportunities in and around our area at the bottom of this page!
