SSq Newsletter – 2nd July 2025

Newsletter

Dear Families,

Who needs Glastonbury when you’ve got the SSQ Festival?!
What an amazing event we had last week, with over 500 people attending! There was such a brilliant buzz throughout the playground and the value of enjoyment was shining through everywhere—from the joyful performances on stage to the laughter at the stalls.

The music was a real highlight, showcasing just how strong our music offer is at SSQ. A huge thank you to all the children who performed so confidently, to the music instrumental teachers who support them week after week, and to all the staff who stayed behind after a long day to help run the stalls. Special thanks to our festival team—Fi, Mel and Kelly—led brilliantly by Chris. We’ll be letting you know soon how much money we raised, all of which will go towards making our music offer even better!

Last week, we also marked Pride in our Friday assembly. We talked about what the word “pride” means, explored its history starting with the Stonewall Riots, and celebrated the progress that has been made towards equality. The children reflected on the importance of kindness, representation, and standing up for others, with a strong message that everyone should be proud of who they are. We also shared examples of famous LGBT+ figures and talked about the importance of respecting names, pronouns, and including everyone. This links to our ongoing work on the protected characteristics and ensuring all members of our community feel seen, valued and respected.

As Wimbledon begins this week, we’re looking ahead to our own sporting celebrations with Sports Days taking place next week—see below for dates and times. Fingers crossed the weather holds out for us: a bit cooler, but dry would be perfect!

Have a lovely week ahead!

Matt

I am available in school from Monday to Wednesday – do get in touch (fcarrick-davies@ssq.org.uk) if you have any questions in the meantime.

If you are having difficulties with managing debt of any kind, such as council tax or rent arrears, or any other sort of debt, please see this website for a charity called Step Change, where you can get free advice and support: https://www.stepchange.org/ They are very helpful either over the phone to start off with, (0800 138 1111, Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm) or if you need more in-depth advice, you can complete a self-referral. They will give you advice about how to start repaying your debt, and how to deal with bailiffs who might be involved with reclaiming your debt, which can be a very worrying and frightening experience. Please get in touch if you would like to talk about this.

Don’t forget our drop in sessions for those living in temporary accommodation in collaboration with Kineara.

Keep an eye on my information page outlining advice from me about various issues that may concern you plus many opportunities that are available to you and your family here in Southwark, also check out the numerous opportunities in and around our area at the bottom of this page!
