Identity

At Surrey Square, our curriculum is driven by purposeful outcomes, is relevant to each and every child and is expansive beyond the national curriculum so that our children will know more, do more and BE more!

Why?

  • It provides the space for children to explore and embrace their role as citizens of London but also of Britain, other countries and of the world.
  • Our work through identity empowers the children to navigate their authentic self, to think beyond themselves and in turn, advocate on behalf of themselves and others.
  • This provides our children with resiliency and a deep understanding that enables them to challenge the biases that they may face in a larger context that devalues them.
  • It ignites within the children, a deeper curiosity of who they are with opportunities to safely and openly seek this.

Our teaching approach

  • Weekly Discrete lessons in Autumn 1.
  • P4C style approach based on picture books.
  • P Factor performance.

Why?

  • Weekly sessions ensure the coverage of the identity themes.
  • Our teaching approach is one that builds the children up towards a final celebration where each class performs a poem that highlights one of the many themes covered within their identity objectives. This is both in line with world poetry day as well as our Oracy curriculum here at Surrey Square. It is a curriculum that remains fluid and ever changing so that it is in line with current and significant events.
  • To tackle sensitivity of themes and to create a safe space for deep discussion, each learning objective has been carefully matched with a picture book that provides a different lens, experience or perspective that the children can grapple with throughout the session.
  • All identity lessons offer a talking point to the children giving them the opportunity to make connections with one another, challenge the thinking of others and that of their own as well as articulate their thoughts eloquently.
